Hinges - How to Choose the Right One For the Job

Home handymen (and women) are sometimes surprised to find out just how many different types of hinges there are on the market. Hinges come in all shapes (i.e. butterfly hinges, square hinges, H hinges, etc.) sizes and styles (i.e. butt hinges.) The type of hinge that should be chosen depends upon the application.

One of the main factors that will influence your choice of hinges is the type of door you are installing. For example, the differences between a cupboard door and a heavy commercial glass door are vast. The hinges must be able to support the door when it comes to:

* The door's weight (i.e. how heavy the door is.) * Frequency of usage (i.e. how often the door is swung open and shut in a given day.)

* Other hardware that is applied to the door (i.e. a door closer.) *How the door is mounted (i.e. flush mounted.)

* Where the door is located (i.e. indoors versus outdoors.)

In other words, a commercial door needs a much stronger, sturdier hinge than a cupboard door. An exterior door requires a hinge that will withstand weather and temperature changes and still function properly. It will also require a hinge with a security-type pin. This type of hinge cannot be tampered with by removing the pin from the outside to gain entry.

Another consideration that may be important when choosing hinges is aesthetics. This may be especially true when it comes to interior doors (both residential and commercial), exterior residential doors (especially architectural doors) and decorative door applications such as cupboards. Hinges can be decorative as well as functional. A non-traditional shape, such as a butterfly hinge, can add an extra dimension of beauty to things like cupboards and cabinets. Butterfly hinges are also often used on small household decorative items like hope chests and jewelry boxes.

Sometimes doors are more aesthetically pleasing when outfitted with concealed hinges. A concealed hinge is hidden from view completely when the door is closed. Concealed hinges are often used in modern/contemporary décor to create clean lines. This type of hinge is frequently found on cupboards and furniture pieces like entertainment unit cabinets, wardrobes, etc. Another factor that may play a role in the type of hinge required for an application is how a particular hinge is constructed.

Hinges come in a variety of styles, the most common being the butt hinge. Butt hinges consist of two halves bound together by a pin. The pin chamber consists of "knuckles" which pivot and allow the door to swing open and shut. Hinges have varying numbers of knuckles. A typical butt hinge has five knuckles. However, they may contain more or fewer than this. Three-knuckle hinges are the second most common. The number of knuckles affects the performance of the hinges, and therefore of the door.

Butt hinges also come with varying numbers of holes for screw insertion. Three to five holes are typical. Sometimes the number of holes isn't important, while other times the number affects the performance of the door.

Be sure that you understand how your door functions before choosing hinges. Choosing the wrong type may compromise the performance or even the safety of the door. The right choice, whether it's a butt hinge, a butterfly hinge or other type, should last for many years. Ideally, the right one will last for the lifetime of the door.

Fight Club, Consumer Psychology, and Redemption

The movie Fight Club was one of those unique films that help define a generation. The movie was preceded by the novel from Chuck Palahniuk, who created such a stir with the book and later the movie that people began to treat Chuck himself like Tyler Durden, often offering to "take care of" people at his request. So what was it about his movie that struck such a cord with people? Many were simply engaged by the movies entertaining elements, but upon deeper examination the movie had a much deeper meaning that this analysis will attempt to explore. Although we start with the idea of an analysis of Tyler Durden, his alter-ego, referred to in the movie as "Jack" is also highly relevant to this discussion.

The narrator "Jack" begins the movie with a raging case of insomnia that is brought on by existential crisis. Much like the character of Meursault in Albert Camus' novel The Stranger, who commented that "life had begun stalking him" Jack has reached a point in his life that is also utterly devoid of meaning as evidenced by his quote, "this is your life and its ending one minute at a time." Finally Jack seems to embrace the Buddhist idea that meaning in life can be achieved by actively meditating on one's own death. He joins a number of survivor's groups where he can see people at the very end of life, and this seems to bring him a great deal of peace. Perhaps a part of him is taking solace in the fact that fate has been cruel to others while it continues to spare him, and this gives him a sense of peace where he can finally get some sleep.

Everything changes when Jack meets Marla who is suffering through a similar existential crisis. Marla, although every bit as lost as Jack, does not have a place in mainstream consumer America and is essentially a bottom feeder in society. All the same, Marla and Jack are kindred souls, and there is an immediate attraction that Jack is unable to act on, until his subconscious creates Tyler Durden.

So Jack's spilt into Tyler can be partially explained by looking at the fundamentals of dissociation. This occurs when someone's thoughts become too uncomfortable to consciously process, and they go into another state as a psychological defense against these painful feelings. The question therefore becomes what was so uncomfortable in Jack's life that he needed to create an alter ego? The answer can be found in looking at our greater American society and how consumerism creates a sense of the empty self.

In Adam Curtis's documentary entitled The Century of the Self, the roots of American consumerism are explored by following the trail of Sigmund Freud's nephew named Edward Bernays. Bernays had studied his uncle's works extensively, and became convinced that people could be manipulated into buying products based on their instinctual drives towards aggressiveness and sexuality.

To back up a second, Freud posited that our subconscious is made up of three separate functions known as the id, ego, and superego. The superego takes the function of what we consider to be the "conscience" which urges us towards moral and just behavior. The id on the other hand is our drive towards destruction and sexuality which Freud thought was inherent in human nature. The ego acts as a kind of referee between these two forces to create a balance where people can successfully function in line with the rules of the society.

Freud believed we were all inherently aggressive and that the id is the dominant force in our lives, and is only curtailed by society's conventions. In Civilization and its Discontents, Freud stated "men are not gentle creatures, who want to be loved, who at the most can defend themselves if they are attacked; they are, on the contrary, creatures among whose instinctual endowments is to be reckoned a powerful share of aggressiveness. As a result, their neighbor is for them not only a potential helper or sexual object, but also someone who tempts them to satisfy their aggressiveness on him, to exploit his capacity for work without compensation, to use him sexually without his consent, to seize his possessions, to humiliate him, to cause him pain, to torture and to kill him."

So to return to Edward Bernays, he felt his uncle's ideas could be used to exploit the American public into buying things they didn't need if he could make them feel that these things would make them more sexually powerful or perceived as more aggressive. Consider Tyler's comment; "God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need" in this regard.

A part of Jack has begun to understand that constantly acquiring furniture and other things for his condo is a meaningless pursuit totally devoid of purpose and fulfillment, and he feels a strong impulse to act on this feeling. Much of Jack's dissociation has to do with this empty sense of self that he realizes he has for years been filling up by buying things, i.e. "What kind of dining set defines me as a person?" Tyler also makes a comment that, "We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no great war, no great depression. Our great war is a spiritual war, and our great depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires and movie gods and rock stars. But we won't. We're slowly learning that fact, and we're very, very pissed off." Jack has begun to reject the consumerism he has become a kind of slave to, also evidenced by his comment that "the things you own end up owning you."

Tyler's comment has a great deal of validity and can be historically supported. Prior to industrialization in this country, most people lived in rural communities where there was a shared sense of community and values of hard work and self-reliance were emphasized. With the coming of industrialization people began flocking to the cities, and with this migration, many of the core values of the rural way of life were also left behind. As people began living in close proximity in the US, a desire to "keep up with the Joneses" soon developed where people wanted to acquire as many possessions as their neighbors to keep up appearances. This mentality was soon exploited by people like Bernays, who worked with business to create adverting campaigns that capitalized on this idea.

World War 2 interrupted the county however, and the "sense of purpose" Tyler refers to came from taking on Adolph Hitler and protecting the world from the spread of fascism. Following World War 2, the consumer machine kicked back in however, and we soon returned to the idea of buying newer and better things in accordance with our deeply rooted subconscious desires. The next generation partially rejected this idea however, and in the 60's a number of social causes such as the Women's Movement, Civil Rights, and brining an end to Vietnam War energized people, and once again created a sense of unified purpose.

The children born after this generation are Tyler's "middle children of history". With more media outlets than ever constantly bombarding them, and no political or social causes to get behind, "Generation X" became one of the most restless and unfulfilled in history, and this is where we pick up the story of Jack.

One interesting piece of Jack's story comes from analyzing his ideas about women and sex. At the beginning of the movie we see him holding a catalog likes it's a porno magazine and we see instead it's an Ikea advertisement. Jack, through filling up his psychological desires by purchasing things, has suppressed his sexual urges and become celibate. When he does create Tyler, he is able to finally release his pent up sexual frustration and release the desires of his id. But when Jack lets this genie out of the bottle, sexual conquest is not the least of Tyler's desires. Freud also believed our drive towards destruction would emerge when society's conventions are stripped away, and this is exactly what happens in the case of Tyler, who wished to destroy the consumerism that has prevented Jack from acting on his natural primitive urges.

Tyler's actions suggest that destruction can also be evolutionary, as evidenced by his comment that "only when we lose everything do we have the power do to anything." By destroying Jack's possessions he feels he has set him free, but it is also important to understand what Jack is now free to do. "Tyler's advice that "self-improvement is masturbation, but self-destruction is where its at" is interesting to consider. In setting himself free has Jack found redemption? This returns us to his comment at the end of his journey, where he remarks "all of this has something to do with a woman named Marla Singer."

So, is love Jack's salvation? This is certainly one hypothesis. At the end of the film, when Jack destroys Tyler, we see two things. One, the towers of consumerism crumbling to the ground, and two, him joining hands with Marla in perhaps their first moment of real intimacy. Perhaps this suggests that Jack has destroyed the power of his addiction to consumerism while also understanding there was a drive in the human instinct more powerful than simply sex.

So is that the message of Fight Club? That love can be the redemptive force that sets us free from our shackles? I think this is a likely explanation. Although as a viewer I particularly enjoyed watching Tyler/Jack free themselves from the bondage of consumer addiction, we still have Jack's comment that "all of this has something to do with a woman named Marla Singer." The nature of the psyche is such, that the ego's defenses aren't stripped away without being replaced by another force to protect the ego. In Jack's case by killing Tyler he has freed himself from his disassociation and unified the forces inside of him into a single front. Bringing down the towers exorcises the demon forces of consumerism that have been filling up Jack's empty self, and he is now free to live through the redemptive powers of love.

So, you finally made your decision on a new flat-panel Television for your apartment! Awesome!

Whether you went with the plasma or an LCD is now a conundrum of the past, only to be replaced with another troubling question:

Should I hang the television on the wall or put it on a stand?

While many would naturally gravitate to the wonderful benefit and space saving positive outcome of hanging your new precious mecca of entertainment on the wall, there are several things to consider before doing so.

First off, mounting a television to a wall will inevitably leave a few holes when you take it down. This becomes an additional challenge for you when you one day take the TV down because it will be up to you to patch up and paint over these holes. If you were to not patch them up, your apartment may end up charging you for the damage.

It's also important to keep in mind that although you are saving some space because the flat-panel is attached to your wall, you will still need a place to put your DVD player, Nintendo Wii, or old school VCR. Not only that, but you will also have all the appropriate cables running from these peripherals and into the TV. How are you going to hide the cables? You can try with a tall plant or a dresser, but then you won''t be saving much floorspace after all, will ya?

With all of these things in mind, I personally made the decision to go with a nice looking TV stand to hold the TV and all all of the peripherals beneath. It still looks great, was very close in price to a wall mount, and isn't near the size of an entertainment center and the best part is that I can move it around anytime I want without drills, screws, and holes in the wall!

For an Apartmentite, it seems to me that the choice is obvious...go with a stand.

Wax or Dirt:

To clean wooden furniture of wax or dirt, dampen a clean rag with some mineral spirit and wipe across the wooden surface. Do this until all the dirt is picked up into the rag. To remove the dirt that collects in the grooves and crevices of carved areas use a cotton swab dipped in spirit.

Water Stains:

For recent and mild stains, cover the stain with a clean, thick blotter and press down hard for a few minutes. White Marks:

Rub the stain with a clean cloth dipped in a mixture of cigarette ash with salad oil or lemon juice. Once the stain has been removed, wipe the surface dry and wax or polish.

Light Cigarette Burns:

Rub the stained surface with scratch-concealing polish. If that does not work you could try rubbing it with a paste of linseed oil and rottenstone with the grain until the burn mark is completely gone.

Nail Polish:

Try to blot the spilled nail polish as soon as possible while it is still wet. If it has become dry, rub it with fine steel wool dipped in wax. Wipe the surface dry and wax or polish.

Heat Marks:

This may be slightly tricky. Rub gently with dry steel wool soap pad or a cloth dampened with camphorated oil or mineral spirits. Be careful not to cause scratches. Use the finest steel wool available. Wipe the surface clean and wax or polish.

Paint Marks:

If the paint is still wet, it can be removed with water or oil-based paint solvents with mineral spirits. If it has become dry, put some boiled linseed oil on the stain and wait until the paint softens and scrape carefully with a knife or wipe with cloth dampened with boiled linseed oil. Wipe the surface dry and wax or polish.

Scratches:

Rub a shoe polish closest in shade into the scratch. This is a very effective and easy solution. You could also use a felt-tip pen of a matching shade to fill into the scratch.

A building is man's testament to engineering. But what of the arts? Here's a couple of strange buildings that separate themselves from the pack.

In my travels I've come across more strange structures that can only leave you asking, "what were they thinking/smoking/trying?" To some people, planning a masterpiece and marrying it with structural functionality is a great way to make a living.

Don't believe me? Then how can you explain the following strange buildings?

San Francisco's House of Falling Furniture - A quaint little building by the corner of 6th and Howard has, since 1997, had several of its furniture running amuck along its sides. Conceived by local artist Brian Goggin, tables, lamps, chairs, and even a grandfather clock are suspended in mid-air, seemingly in the process of jumping/being thrown out a window. "Defenestration," as its theme explains that fact. It's a pretty strange sight for first-time-defenestrated-furniture spotters, but the fact that the locals don't really react much to this strange building makes it seem like "furniture jumping out a window" is a pretty normal thing in 'Cisco.

Crooked House in Poland - You may need to scratch your eyes a bit when you see this gorgeous architectural marvel. (And ask yourself, "am I high?") Located in Bohaterrow Monte Casino street, this extension to the shopping center of the street provides a refreshing take on buildings. While you may think that this was an LSD-trip-brought-to-life, the Crooked House is actually in reference to the out-of-this-world art of Jan Marcin Szancer and Per Dahlberg.

The Crazy House in Vietnam - While there're structures that are typically designed to look "industrial" or "futuristic," there are strange buildings that go the "organic" route. That's probably the thought in Dr. Dang Viet Nga's mind when she designed the place. (Doesn't it remind you of an old, old Outer Limits episode?) The aptly-named building is actually a Villa, with 10 fully-themed rooms. And no, it doesn't look like that on the inside!

Hundertwasser Building in Austria - Located in Darmstadt, this strange funhouse-like building was built by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, a famous Austrian painter and architect. This building called the "Waldspirale" or "Forest Spiral" has 105 apartments and wraps around a courtyard with a running stream. The continuous spiraling roof, whose highest part reaches the 12th floor, is covered by a garden, which has beech, maple and lime trees.

Mattress Graveyards - Should We Really Be Burying Our Mattresses?

We all buy mattresses for our homes and often get five, ten, fifteen maybe twenty years worth of use out of these mattresses. We go out and purchase a new mattress and of course must find a way to dispose of our old mattress. Many dispose of their mattresses via trash or disposal service. But this leads to filling our landfills with old mattresses creating a sort of mattress graveyard where more trash and debris cover them up to lay beneath tons and tons of trash in a landfill. Many of the materials inside these mattresses is not biodegradable.

This is the month of October which brings us Halloween, ghosts, ghouls and scares. Perhaps, when we bury our old mattresses we should be concerned that they are going to rise from the ground and walk the earth like mattress zombies scouring the Earth for restless sleepers like us . Perhaps your old mattress is looking for you like the zombie out of a Halloween thriller. Maybe there is a better way though of disposing our old mattresses that's more green friendly rather than burying them. That way they won't be possessed with the idea of coming to find us.

Many civic leaders and environmentalist have come to the same conclusion that disposing of large bulky items that can't decompose into a landfill just isn't the solution. So what are some of the options we have for discarding our old mattresses? If your mattress is perhaps five years old or less and is still in new or close to new condition then it should be recommended to ask family or friends if they can use your mattress. Explain how much you paid for it and tell them you'd rather see someone you know be able to use it rather than discarding it. You'd be surprised how many people may have a mattress on its last leg and may jump at an opportunity to replace it with a more modern mattress.

Perhaps your family and friends are happy with their mattresses (which is good) and just can't find a use for yours. If this is the case why not considering donating your mattress to one of the many charitable organizations or non-profit organizations out there. Companies like Goodwill or Salvation Army are often happy to accept lightly used mattresses that they can use in their own programs or offer them for sale through their stores to raise money for the different programs they offer for your community. It's not scary at all to drop off your old mattress to the different drop off locations. Who knows, perhaps your mattress will find a new home and live again.

There are also manufacturers who take old mattresses and use the old steel spring components and anything else that can be recycled to make new reconditioned mattresses. With the price of steel and foams climbing many of these businesses are able to recycle old mattresses and re-introduce new components into them to make a new mattress. These mattresses feature yellow law labels sewn into them and are companies like these accept and often will pick up old mattresses for these components. Typically only found in larger metropolitan areas these manufacturers or local shops help to find new life for your old mattress which will keep it out of a landfill. Recycled and reconditioned mattresses won't have bugs or other crawling creatures come out of them like some scary Halloween thriller. They are specially sanitized and cleaned before being returned to the general public for sale again but have new life breathed into them.

Many city waste processing centers are starting to recycle old mattresses by taking the steel out of them and scrapping it and melting it down as well. Not all do this but many are again due to the high cost of steel. You can contact your local city waste pickup center and ask them if they recycle. Metal scrap yards might also be a great place for recycling your mattress rather than introducing it into a landfill.

In this article I brought out the fact that landfills have long been mattress graveyards by mattresses being placed into landfills and buried by tons of trash and waste. There are alternatives to this and include donating your mattress to companies like Goodwill or the Salvation Army. Having them picked up by local manufacturers who recycle them into new reconditioned mattresses. There is always the choice too of having them picked up by your local waste or recycling center which can use the steel and other materials out of the mattress which will reduce what goes into landfills.

Hopefully if you're considering disposing of a mattress you can find a better home for it than having it get buried into a graveyard of old mattresses, trash and other waste. If you decide to try to recycle your old mattress than you're definitely doing you're part to help be more green and eco-friendly towards our environment. If you decide to just send your old mattress off to a landfill however, beware. Old mattresses in the mattress graveyard have been known to come out at night, looking for restless sleepers with whom to find. As you're telling ghost stories around that Halloween campfire, watch out behind you. That old mattress may be lurking like an undead zombie in the shadows. Stay alert and make sure you all stay together. Much like our planet's ecology if we all do our part we'll hopefully make it through to the sequel.

You're going to need space for your books, a desk, and of course, room for your friends for all those 'Animal House' parties you plan to throw. Then you have the sleeping arrangements. That queen size bed takes up a lot of space, and on top of that, you have that roommate who likes to sleep in the nude. Definitely not a situation you want to be stuck with over the semesters. What are you to do? Well the answer may be simple. A Bunk Bed!

Now I know what you're thinking: "Why should I own a bunk bed? I'm not 10 years old anymore!" Well, you might be (even if only at heart). But even if you're not, do you really want to be stuck in the situation illustrated above? Above all else, they are an economical way to save space and money.

Having a roommate or even two can be great fun for any or all students. However, finding a place for everyone to sleep can be a daunting task, especially within the minimalist confines of dorm rooms these days. Thankfully, with the help of a bunk bed, you can make room for everyone who lives in your dorm. They take up very little floor space, and allow two to sleep comfortably without having to share or fight over the blanket. Have two roommates? No worries, just pick up one of the versions with a trundle unit. This way, three people can sleep comfortably at night (and still have enough room to party hard during the day).

So there you have it! Now you're equipped with all the information you need to have a good night's sleep, to have enough room to work on those all important reports, and of course, party like it's 1999 (they did party harder back then).
